| Homeschool Legal Defense Attorney"s |
In my previous post I mentioned HSLDA (homeschool legal defense Attorney's) this may sound scary and you may be asking why on earth will I need attorney's? Simple answer to give your school a resource to protect your right to homeschool in whatever state you are from.
Who are they
HSLDA Is a homeschool defense organization that assist homeschooling families who may had faced issues with there school districts trying to keep them from homeschooling by threatening CPS, or being denied services for there special needs students,. HSLDA also helps in things like support in keeping school records, or help with high school preparations or college prep. If you private home school then you will want to go to there website https://hslda.org and sign up for membership. The cost of membership is just ten dollars a month and it provides you with an attorney who will stand up for your rights if ever they are challenged.
Membership
As a member you have access to downloadable documents that pertain to your school year, help with special needs children, and they also assist with low income families who wish to homeschool but can't afford curriculum. Another great service they offer is a break down of everything you need to know about homeschooling a high school student, from classes to take, to graduation prep, and even college prep. My favorite thing about it is you can email them with any question and they get back to you promptly. They offer advice on DMV and work permits and are constantly updating your states laws on homeschooling. Yes they are for every state which is an amazing tool to have.
Why do I need them
What circumstances would cause you to need HSLDA? In some states like here in California you have people who are still naive to what private homeschooling is, they assume you have your kids in cages feeding them bread and water. They tend to believe it is a type of abuse to teach your kids at home, now don't get me wrong these are the minority not the majority, as homeschooling has become a more acceptable form of schooling. For those who are still stuck in there personal beliefs they can cause some issues, like calling CPS, or reporting you to the school district claiming your child doesn't go to school, or send police at your door. Sounds ridiculous I know but people can be quit weird at times. If this ever happened HSLDA would contact the school district for you and have a great "your interfering with parental rights" talk. You can also contact them while you had a CPS worker or officer at your door and they would give them the same talk, with you never having to say a word. Another scenario would be if you had a special needs child who was being denied services by the public school in your district because you homeschool, you can contact the Special Needs Consultant and they will help by submitting the appropriate documents to allow your child the rights to get services. Other scenarios would be taking advantage of their record keeping services, access to forms and sample letters, access to kindergarten-eighth grade consultants, and access to support groups. Every homeschooling parent should make getting a membership a priority, as you can see it has a ton of benefits to make your journey a smooth, stress free experience, and that's the Heart of The Matter.
